Shakespeare knows us. He knows our loves and our passions, our desires and ambitions, our fears and foibles, our ribaldries and despairs. We find our own faces reflected in the characters he created, our own stories refracted through the tales that he tells.

But what do we know about Shakespeare? The actor, playwright and poet whom we so proudly acclaim as the cornerstone of our culture was born in Stratford on April 23, 1564, and died in the same county town on the same date in 1616.
